A Dancer’s Body

I had originally worried about Aili in ballet because I know there is a preference for graceful, thin girls in ballet. Aili is sturdy and slightly uncoordinated. I didn’t want her to feel bad about herself or think that she needed to be skinny to dance.

After dance last night she came running out of the studio full speed with a big smile on her face.

“Did I dance good, Mama?!” she shouted excitedly.

“You did!” I replied, trying not to let on that I was actually in Target for most of her class.

“Can I have a soft taco then?” she squealed.

There were some older girls around, all thin teenagers. They all looked at Aili with amusement.

“Sure can,” I said, leading her out to the car.

“Good! I am hungry! Maybe I can have two soft tacos?”

I guess I don’t need to worry about her starving herself to fit in…
